Summer is the time to discover some carefree new pieces to incorporate into your everyday wardrobe. Effortlessly cool style is always in-style no matter what the season, and all of our brands live by this notion. This year we are happy to see some great coverups and dresses from every brand. Another great touch to the summer collections were the soft ultra comfy shorts that came in a variety of warm colors and patterns. Some call this look–hippie chic, bohemian, we just like call it pure bliss. Please enjoy our 2nd Summer Lookbook that we shot in beautiful Southern California.

One of our favorite summer trends this year is crocheted garments. Everything from tops to purses to skirts are popping up from all your favorite brands and we’ve got em all. This 70s inspired trend looks great on the O’Neill Honolua Dress as seen below with just a slight hit of crochet on the top and bottom of the dress.

You’ve heard the saying, every girls needs a little black dress (LBD) but we’re here to tell you that every girls needs a little white dress (LWD). Black is great and it’s chic but it seems too dull in summer when everything is so bright and lively. Check out our favorite the Matix Legal Tender Dress.

While shorts aren’t necessarily a trend, they are a summer staple and a must have. No passport required to enjoy our favorite, these colorful and ethnic inspired shorts have an earthy tone that will match great with a sold colored tank or top. Below are our two favorites, the Roxy Shore Shot Shorts and the Volcom Sand Dollar Shorts.

Below is one of our favorite style tops from O’Neill Girls. This O’Neill Birds of Prey Tee is an oversized cropped tee that has a vingage wash on 100% cotton. Super soft and perfectly worn in just for you!

With more than 500,000 people in attendance along a 14-acre stretch of sand on the south side of Huntington Beach Pier, the Nike US Open of Surfing showcases the best in surf, skate, BMX, music, fashion and art.

“It’s hard to match the experience of the world’s best in sports, music and art coming together on the beach in one of action sports’ most iconic locations,” said Sandy Bodecker, VP Nike Action Sports. “Our commitment this year is to bring the energy from Huntington Beach to even more fans across the world.

The 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing will run from July 30 to August 7. All events are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC or can be viewed live daily at www.usopenofsurfing.com. The event is owned and produced by IMG, the global leader in sports and entertainment.

Anchored by the world’s largest professional surfing competition, the $460,000 US Open is a pivotal point on the ASP World Tour for both the men and women. The Men’s side will feature a North America ASP Men’s Prime event with valuable points on the line right before the coveted ASP Top 32 cut-off. For the women, the US Open of Surfing will witness the final event of the 2011 ASP World Title Tour and crown a women’s world champion in Surf City this summer. “I’m really excited to be returning to Huntington Beach to try to defend my US Open title,” says Hawaii’s Carissa Moore. “It’s so fun to be competing in front of so many people!” In addition to the high-stakes Mens and Womens divisions, the US Open will feature a grade four men’s and women’s Pro Junior as well as the Pacifico Nose Riding Invitational – always a crowd favorite.

The action doesn’t stop at the shoreline. On the beach, the event will once again host eye-opening tricks from the most talented and diverse crew of riders from across the globe as they skate in a state-of-the-art skate bowl at Converse Coastal Carnage. And, a stellar crew of BMX riders will push the realm of possibility at the Nike 6.0 HB BMX Pro. The runway will be busy on Thursday, August 4 as five of the nation’s top high schools will compete for $25,000 in the Hurley Walk the Walk National Championship – the ultimate youth fashion competition. Brand of the Month: Billabong’s History

Posted by Kacee ON July 1, 2011 • StyleSurfComment

Welcome to our first Brand of the Month posting on Billabong! This month we will take you through a behind the scenes look into one of the biggest companies in the world of surfing, Billabong!

During the late 60’s and early 70’s, the surfing lifestyle meant getting in your kombi van packed to the rafters with surfboards, surfmaps, tents and sleeping bags and heading to the coast for classic surfing safari.

Where one ended up depended entirely on the waves. One day you could be riding the hollow lefthand reef-break at Summercloud Bay on Sydney’s south coast, the next morning you could wake up at Angourie on NSW’s far north coast.

The weather map dictated which direction these free-spirited wave hunters would point their kombi, and nobody knew how to read weather map better than ex-Maroubra surfer Gordon Merchant. He had an uncanny ability to turn up at the right beach exactly when it was ‘going off’ (that translated means when the wind, tide and surf combine to produce perfect waves).

It was after one such magic surf-run up the coast, in search of that inevitable Pot of Gold, that invariably punctuated his surf safaris, that meant Gordon simply did not return to Maroubra. He had found his surfing Utopia, a 20 miles stretch of golden beach and perfect point breaks.

AS far as Gordon was concerned this was Meca- averaging 300 days per year of good quality surf, where one could wear boardshorts or baggies for 9 months of the year. He settled in quickly and it was not long before Gordon was making a significant contribution to the Gold Coast’s infant surfing industry.

As a shaper, Gordon made a huge breakthrough when he introduced a surfboard with a tucked-under edge, a development that aided Joe Larkin’s team-riders Michael Petersen and Rabbit Bartholomew in their ascension to the top world surfing.

As a surfer, Gordon saved many a wiped-out surfer from grief when he developed the first leg-rope. Sure, it was a primitive device by today’s standards, but anybody who has had to scramble over the rocks at Burleigh Heads on a big day owes Gordon a schooner.

In 1973 Gordon and Rena Merchant began producing handmade boardshorts under their flat overlooking his beloved Burleigh. They were tough as teak, able to withstand not only the elements, but also able to absorb the sort of punishment that local juniors Guy Omerod and Rabbit Bartholomew would put those first issued
trunks through.

From those humble beginnings, Billabong was born.

Gordon buried himself in his North Burleigh factory for the next few years and Billabong gradually made ground on the more established labels. His no frills, practical approach to boardshort manufacturing paid dividends, as Billabong grew steadily until his little homespun factory literally burst at the seams.

It was out to West Burleigh, a modern factory and warehouse and much more work for Gordon and Rena. Sure a lot of low pressure systems, plus the waves they generated, passed by the coast during those years, but Gordon’s Kombi stayed put.

It became obvious to the Australian Surfing Industry that here was a man, driven by the desire to produce the highest quality, best cut boardshort on the market, and by the early 80’s Billabong had achieved it’s primary objective.

During the 80’s Billabong went International, firstly exporting to California, Japan, New Zealand and Europe and then finally licensing, but only after each international licensee had achieved Gordon’s benchmark of dedication, honesty and prudent business savvy.

Gordon surrounded himself with some of the finest minds in the industry, both in Australia and abroad, who helped steer the good ship Billabong on a course which would take Billabong to the helm of the world surfing.

In the water, surfers of the calibre of Joe Engel, Mark Occhilupo, Luke Egan, Wayne Bartholomew, Munga Barry, Shane Dorian, Taj Burrows, Sunny Garcia and the late Ronnie Burns have given Billabong international credibility, not to mention Worldwide exposure.

As we entered the 90’s, Billabong had well and truly assumed #1 status in Australian waters and had further consolidated on the International scene. Of course, very few people even realised that Gordon Merchant had such a hands-on role in designing, marketing and sales, but having an intimate understanding of the fickle nature of the garments industry, Gordon knows that every label lives and dies by each seasons range.

On it’s 25th Anniversary in 1998, Billabong moved into the new premises at 1 Billabong Place, Burleigh Heads, featuring a state of the art new factory. One feature of the new complex is the Polynesian style Retail Showroom, that stands proudly at the forefront of the factory, displaying the largest range of Billabong product anywhere in the world.

Billabong is involved in many promotions, but one thing that underpins the respect the company enjoys in the marketplace, is Billabong’s commitment to pro boardsports and its team riders. Billabong sponsors many events around the world, with a heavy emphasis on Junior athlete development, but the Jewels in the Crown are The Billabong Pro contests held in Teahupoo – Tahiti, Jeffreys Bay – South Africa, Mundaka – Spain and the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii.

Why did they name it Killer Dana?

Killer Dana was a legendary surf break located in Dana Point, California. The surf break was notorious because it came out of deep water and broke close to the rocks that lined the beach. The Killer Dana wave was destroyed when the Dana Point Harbor was built in 1966. A breakwater now cuts right through the heart of the once epic surf spot.

An excerpt from Surfline.com‘s article on the Killer Dana Surf Break:

Of all the surf spots silenced in the name of “progress” (Stanley’s in Ventura, Magic Island in Hawaii, Petacalco in Mexico), none was as significant and thoroughly rippable as Southern California’s late Killer Dana. A sometimes huge right-hander of disputed power, the break was officially put to death on August 29, 1966, when the Army Corp of Engineers closed it to all “marine activities” so they could get to their joyous task of building a recreational harbor. On that date, a handful of longtime locals — George “Peanuts” Larson and Ron Drummond among them — rode their beloved break one last time.

This final note on Killer Dana: that first boulder dropped in 1966 was fitted for a time capsule. Among other era bric-a-brac sealed inside the rock was a photograph (rumored to be taken by Doc Ball) of the Killer Dana crew preparing for one of their final go-outs. Those who’ve seen the shot say the guys look fairly pissed off. The capsule is slated to be opened on August 29, 2016, 50 years after a really good pointbreak bit the big one.

What the NEFF?

Posted by Kacee ON June 1, 2011 • NewsStyleComment

New to KillerDana.com is an upbeat and stylish headwear brand called NEFF! Neff is supported by some of the biggest snowboarders, skateboarders and surfers in the world, not to mention that everyone here at Killer Dana loves em!

Neff was launched in 2002 by Shaun Neff in sunny Southern California. Growing up in Cali, surrounded by the skate, surf and snow culture, Shaun always had an aspiration to be a part of the business side of the industry. Originally starting out as a clothing company, Shaun made a couple shirts and hats and hustled his Neff product out of his car. Later that year, he moved to Utah to further his education and  to spread the Neff vibe. He bought bargain beanies and headbands, tagged them with Neff, and gave them to the biggest, dopest pros in the snow industry. Shaun soon realized that in order to get snow and skate pros in on the Neff movement, his company would have to focus on headwear to avoid conflict with clothing sponsor contracts. NEFF HEADWEAR was born, being the first authentic core snow and skate headwear company in the game. That’s the genius behind Neff, which spread globally under a unique niche of headwear.

Neff is all about having fun and bringing new vibes and steeze to the game. “We are like a gumball machine; spitting out endless flavors for the world to consume,” stated Shaun Neff when asked to describe Neff Headwear. Neff has huge plans for the future and will continue to focus on the core roots of the brand meaning, HEADWEAR, which has always been and will continue to be the focus in spreading the Neff love.
