This past Saturday Killer Dana was able to co-sponsor and partake in the 8th annual Girls in Ocean Science Teen Conference at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point. The day-long conference is designed for enthusiastic girls middle girls (next month is high school girls) who are excited to explore careers in areas such as ocean conservation, marine biology and ecology, marine paleontology, oceanography, environmental law and more.
With the help of 9 prominent women scientists working in the fields of Marine and Environmental Studies the girls were able to enjoy a day of interactive workshops aboard the research vessel, R/V Sea Explorer, and in the Ocean Institute’s teaching labs. Some of the speakers included Cassondra Williams, a PHD student at Scripps Institution of Oceanography who studies Emperor Penguins in Antarctica, Tracy Egoscue an Environmental Lawyer who specializes in ensuring clean water and air quality in Southern California, and Kiersten Darrow a Research Curator who helps research and raise baby Garibaldi (in addition to 6 other speakers).
The sold out conference was home to 120+ girls from all over Southern California who weren’t afraid to get a little salt in their hair, and sediment under their finger nails. Some of the hands on workshops ranged anywhere from working on a wet lab with plankton, to building an ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle), mock trials for environmental debates, and even studying the developmental stages of rock shrimp!
Shout out to the Ocean Institute and the team of committee girls who helped make this event possible. Also a HUGE shout out to Hurley and DC Womens for hooking up all 120 girls, and O’Neill Girls for helping Killer Dana get raffle prizes for the event!
