Across 900 beaches and coastlines all over the planet, people joined for the first global Hands Across the Sand event. That was one year ago tomorrow.
On June 25, 2011, the people of the world will join hands to champion clean energy solutions to our filthy fuels problem. Embracing a clean energy future now is the path to a sustainable planet. Go to HandsAcrossTheSand.com to find a group near you… or just start one yourself with your friends. Be sure to take pictures and send them in!
Hands Across the Sand is a movement made of people of all walks of life and crosses political affiliations and the borders of the world. This movement is not about politics — it is about the protection of our coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife and fisheries. The accidents that continue to happen in offshore oil drilling are a threat to all of the above. Expanding offshore oil drilling is not the answer; embracing Clean Energy is.
What are they trying to accomplish? On a local, national and global level, Joining Hands sends a powerful visual message of human solidarity to our nation’s leaders. They are unified in the defense of the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we consume from dangerous, dirty energy sources. Every time people join hands that message is reinforced. It’s simple and logical: embrace clean energy. A line in the sand is a powerful thing.
The Movement Started In Florida
In Florida on Saturday, February 13, 2010, a statewide gathering against near and offshore oil drilling occurred. 10,000 Floridians representing 60 towns and cities and over 90 beaches joined hands to protest the efforts by the Florida Legislature and the US Congress to lift the ban on oil drilling in the near and off shores of Florida. Florida’s Hands Across The Sand event was the largest gathering in the history of Florida united against expanding oil drilling into Florida’s waters. Events were held from Jacksonville to Miami Beach and Key West to Pensacola Beach.
On June 26, 2010, in response to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, Hands Across the Sand went National and Global. The event was announced and the website went live allowing event organizers sign up only four weeks prior to June 26th. It became the largest gathering of people in the history of the world united against expanding offshore oil drilling and championing clean energy and renewables. Over 1000 events were held worldwide. Events took place in all 50 United States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Events were held in 42 countries outside the U.S. including Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Belize, Canada, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Germany, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Spain, France, United Kingdom, Greenland, Greece, Croatia, Ireland, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Lebanon, Mexico, Malaysia, Nicaragua, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Panama, Peru, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Turkey, Tanzania, and South Africa.
Mission Statement:
1. To bring together like-minded individuals and organizations with the conviction to organize a Global movement to promote a clean energy future for our earth and end our dependence on dirty fuel sources. These gatherings will bring thousands of American and Global citizens to our beaches and cities and will draw metaphorical and actual lines in the sand; human lines in the sand against the threats Fossil Fuels and offshore oil drilling pose to our present and future planet.
2. To convince our State Legislators, Governors, Congress and President Obama and world leaders to adopt policies encouraging the growth of clean and renewable energy sources in place of oil and

Why did they name it Killer Dana?
Killer Dana was a legendary surf break located in Dana Point, California. The surf break was notorious because it came out of deep water and broke close to the rocks that lined the beach. The Killer Dana wave was destroyed when the Dana Point Harbor was built in 1966. A breakwater now cuts right through the heart of the once epic surf spot.
An excerpt from Surfline.com‘s article on the Killer Dana Surf Break:
Of all the surf spots silenced in the name of “progress” (Stanley’s in Ventura, Magic Island in Hawaii, Petacalco in Mexico), none was as significant and thoroughly rippable as Southern California’s late Killer Dana. A sometimes huge right-hander of disputed power, the break was officially put to death on August 29, 1966, when the Army Corp of Engineers closed it to all “marine activities” so they could get to their joyous task of building a recreational harbor. On that date, a handful of longtime locals — George “Peanuts” Larson and Ron Drummond among them — rode their beloved break one last time.
This final note on Killer Dana: that first boulder dropped in 1966 was fitted for a time capsule. Among other era bric-a-brac sealed inside the rock was a photograph (rumored to be taken by Doc Ball) of the Killer Dana crew preparing for one of their final go-outs. Those who’ve seen the shot say the guys look fairly pissed off. The capsule is slated to be opened on August 29, 2016, 50 years after a really good pointbreak bit the big one.

Friday May 6, 2011- Lower Trestles, San Clemente: Heading into the final day only two Americans were left, and not surprisingly, both Kolohe Andino and Tanner Gudauskas were San Clemente locals. The end results of the day? Kolohe ended up getting 3rd in the Oakley Pro Junior Finals and Miguel Pupo is the winner of the 2011 Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro.
The quality of surf ranged from good to pretty flat at some times for the recent Nike 6.0 Lower’s Pro. As a whole the event was fun to watch but something was lacking from previous years… it could have been due to a multitude of things: marginal surf and weather at times, the lacking of big name surfers like Kelly Slater, Mich Fanning, and Joel Parkinson, or it could have been just pure laziness from the spectators who lacked the desire to park a mile away from the contest and hike out to the event. None the less the event still hosted a fun 40 hours of surfing and provided a showcase for Juniors and Brazilians.
Stop by the store today, Friday the 6th, as we have a special giveback event for Breast Cancer Awareness (just in time for Mothers Day weekend). 10% of all of today’s sales will be donated to Keep a Breast. And O’Neill has made these limited edition mens and womens pink themed t-shirts. This is really a special cause and your support would be greatly appreciated.
This past week of surf offered up a mixed bag of tricks… some miss and hit sessions… but with the right attitude and the right spot, there was some fun surf to be had… even as I write this there were some parts of South Orange County that were in full skatepark mode. This week, the surf will be a tad better and offer up some more consistent surf. The NPAC still is slowing down, but still throws some short-to-mid-period swell our way. The SPAC is brewing, and is sending some small, but consistent mid-period swell our way.
Kolohe- Day 3 of the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro
Friday- Saturday expect waist-to-chest high waves. Orange County will see the SSW on the buoys as the dominant swell, while San Diego and LA will see more combo swell. San Diego County will see increased wave heights over the weekend.
Sunday Expect waist-to-chest high waves with plus sets going head- high at the prime south spots. We get a little more south groundswell (16sec+), so find the right spot and time the tide right and you could see some occasional overhead sets.
Monday-Tuesday a WNW windswell mixes in with the south, so expect waist-to-head high waves at the beach breaks that like this shorter- period windswell along with the south that we get.
Wednesday-Thursday the swell backs down a bit and will be in the waist-to-chest high range at most areas. The south swell will be the dominant swell, so look for those swell magnets.
The winds this week will again be an issue. There will be times in the mornings that offer up some light offshore winds, this takes place more mid-week. Overall winds will be onshore and pretty strong in the afternoons. Most mornings will also see some south wind and well…bummer. Weather temps will be fair and the water temps continue to warm with the south swells that we receive. Beware, of the windswell that we receive, as water temps can drop quickly.
The SPAC is brewing up a nice size storm and we should see some descent surf sent our way the following week. However, this storm is still way too far out to make the call, but if it works out, some overhead surf could be headed our way.

2010 6.0 LOWERS PRO CHAMPION: GABE KLING
Enticed by the opportunity to surf perfect Lower Trestles—one of the most high-performance wave on the Southern California coast—with only three other surfers out, the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro is a must on the calendars of some of the world’s best competitors. In addition, with a recent transition to the ASP One Ranking System, 96 surfers in this Prime event will have even more at stake going into the competition. Lowers is one of the few singular events on the ASP Prime schedule that has played a critical role in defining the path that future greats would walk down. Jeff Booth, Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, Shane Beschen, CJ Hobgood, Benny Bourgeois, Fred Patacchia, and Gabe Kling all have hoisted the coveted trophy. With increasing talent and a whole new host of contenders entering the scene, 2011 promises to be yet another unforgettable year.
Quick, grab some quarters and find the swell making machine and start loading it up as our run of some descent- to-fun surf is really going to come to a halt over the next week. The NPAC has really slowed down and is mainly sending short-to-mid-period swell intervals our way. The SPAC has been brewing up some storms, but no real sizeable surf is headed our way. The South swell that does make it our way will be very small in terms of swell height and the swell intervals will be in the mid-period (12-15 sec) range. There is some activity from the SPAC that we start to see the following week… but that is still way too far out to make the call. The one positive is that we will have plenty of sunshine and warm weather over the next week starting around Sunday and going through week’s end.
Friday-Saturday expect waves heights to be in the waist-to-shoulder high range. The WNW short-mid period swell will be the dominant swell in the water. South San Diego will be the call for increased wave heights. On Saturday there will be a slight increase in wave heights on the sets and prime spots, most likely around head high on the sets. The spots that like this mid-period interval in San Diego and Orange County will offer up some fun surf. This WNW swell quickly drops off after Saturday. Sunday the small scale SSW swell will start to show up on some of the buoys. Expect waist-high waves at most breaks and some plus sets at some of the better south spots. Monday things get worst and one can expect waist-high and below surf… so go to the spot that you know will have something out there no matter what. Tuesday-Thursday the surf jumps up a tad bit as a new small scale SSW swell moves in. Wave heights increase into the waist-to-chest high range and there will be some ok surf to be had at the better south swell spots. Tide, like usual, will play a big role, but especially on these smaller days. The winds offer up some favorable conditions on some mornings and early afternoons, as the winds will be offshore early Saturday, and Monday-Tuesday as well. However, stronger onshore flow takes place in the afternoons, so schedule accordingly.
